Idaho Wildfire
Western Wildfire: National Geographic assignment - Summer of 2000.
Flew in a Schweitzer 300 (2 person helicopter) to cover this for the magazine. Every turbine helicopter within a few hundred miles was booked for fire-fighting duty.
I saw just about every type of helicopter from the gigantic Skycrane to loads of Bell 212's.
These images were shot along the Snake River in northern Idaho. The pilot and I flew a couple of hundred miles (low and slow) to get to the base camp for the fire fighters. Checked in with the chief and picked up some additional safety gear for the flights. Also, we had to check-in via radio every five minutes with a position check.
